Robin Newton is rapidly establishing an reputation as an imaginative, dramatic conductor of a wide repertoire. Highlights of his current season include appearances with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, Garsington Opera, Den Nye Oper, Bampton Classical Opera and Co-Opera Co.
He has worked with internationally renowned orchestras and opera houses including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Bergen Philharmonic, the Deutsche Oper, Opera North, English National Opera and Den Nye Oper. As a symphony conductor, he regularly performs a wide repertoire and has worked closely with Andrew Litton and Jiří Bělohlávek.
Robin Newton studied at Cambridge University then the Royal Northern College of Music. As an assistant he developed a deep understanding of opera through work with Sir Mark Elder and David Parry. He has a particularly strong knowledge of the bel canto repertoire from his long association with Opera Rara, where he has worked on over 20 recordings of rare operas by Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, Mercadante and others.
He has also established an important relationship with Garsington Opera, where his performance credits include Il re pastore, Fidelio and Magic Flute. He has previously been Music Director of Preston Opera and Hampstead Garden Opera.
Robin Newton is also closely associated with new music having given a number of world premieres with his new music group, e2K. He was also a conductor on Jonathan Dove’s recent television opera Man on the Moon and will give the world première performances of Stephen McNeff’s Daughters of the Elements with Tête-á-Tête on 20 and 21 August at the Riverside Studios.
This season’s plans include Aida at the Royal Albert Hall, Magic Flute with Garsington Opera, La pazza giornata at the Buxton Festival, a concert performance of Rossini’s Armida in St John’s, Smith Square, a recording with Opera Rara and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and appearances with the Herts Chamber Orchestra and the Haydn Chamber Orchestra.
